24.

Wooden splinters ripped at my cloak as I slid along the rough surface. Twisting, I tried to get to a weapon but my heart dropped into my stomach when the wagon bed underneath my back suddenly disappeared and I was plummeting downwards.

My breath exploded from my lungs as I crashed down on the grass. On instinct, I rolled to the side to escape my assailant but a foot on my cloak had me coming to an abrupt halt. The garment dug into my throat. Reaching up, I flicked open the clasp and continued my roll. Air rushed out of me again as the next boot took me straight in the stomach.

Black spots danced across my vision. I sucked in a strained gasp while trying desperately to hold on to consciousness as my body spasmed from the blow. Grass appeared under my cheek. The smell of damp soil enveloped me as I forced a breath into my starved lungs. Someone was twisting my arms behind my back but I could do nothing about it because my body was still trying to shut down on me. I was vaguely aware of someone dark-clad struggling a few strides away and of someone, or perhaps several people, screaming about something. Cold metal wrapped around my wrists.

Still failing to make my body obey me, I was helpless when someone hauled me up and dumped me over their shoulder like a sack of grain. The way back into the tents passed in a blur as my mind fought against the unconsciousness that the boot to my solar plexus had tried to produce, but the one thing I did see was the face of an anxious guard watching me with nervous violet eyes. The face of the guard I had almost killed before Hadraeth stopped me. The one who had betrayed us after all.

Pain shot through my hip as it slammed into the ground. I blinked. Something black flew in after me and then metallic ringing vibrated through my skull. Closing my eyes, I focused on making the world stop being so wobbly. Boots stomped around as if a number of people were entering and leaving the area and there were sounds of a scuffle from somewhere close by.

“I am truly disappointed in both of you.”

Shards of ice scraped against my bones at the sound of that voice.

“You have defied me time and again. It will not happen again.”

I opened my eyes. My vision still swam slightly at the edges but it was at last clear enough to take in my surroundings. A metal cage inside a white tent. An assassin handcuffed beside me. And there on the other side of the bars were five star elves. Two of them were aiming nocked arrows at the one kneeling in the middle of the tent. Hadraeth. Shackles gleamed around his wrists. Next to him, Princess Illeasia was staring between the captured captain and the final elf in the room.

Clad in a regal silver gown and a glittering headdress of white gems was the person I wanted to stab more than anyone on this entire continent.
